Returnable jars and egg cartons: deposits, QR scans and credit

Give every milk jar or egg carton its own QR code, take a deposit, and give store credit to whoever brings one back.

Set it up (Core and up)

  1. Settings → Your farm → Returnable containers: add each kind (Milk jar $3, Egg carton $1) and pick its label size.
  2. Products → edit → Returnable container: choose the container for each product that goes out in one.
  3. Farmstand → Containers: make as many new containers as you have and print their QR labels (jar labels are 1.5 in squares; carton labels are 2⅝ × 1 in, 30 to a sheet). Use waterproof labels on jars that get washed.

Selling

  • Pickup orders, farm shares and repeat orders add the deposit for every container going out — customers see it on your stand page and at checkout.
  • At the register, the deposit is added to the sale by itself. Tap Scan jars out / empties back: empties the customer hands back come straight off this sale's deposit (a swap).
  • At pickup, open the order and tap Containers: scan the empties coming back first, then the full ones going out. The returns come off that pickup, so a regular who swaps pays nothing extra.

Returns and credit

  • Scan the container's own QR (or type its code). Whoever brings it back gets the deposit as store credit — not necessarily who bought it.
  • Credit is never cash. It comes off the customer's next order automatically, matched by their email or phone.
  • A container can only be credited once per trip: scanning one that's already back, retired, or not yours says so and gives nothing.
  • Lost or broken? Scan it under Retire. The deposit paid for it stays with you.

Keeping track

  • Farmstand → Containers shows each kind: how many you have, at the farm, out, out 30/60/90+ days, return rate, and who holds the most.
  • Subscribers who cancelled with containers still out are listed; you keep their deposits. If the containers come back later, whoever returns them still gets the credit.

A customer can scan a jar with their own phone: it opens a page saying whose it is and what it's worth back.
