Eggs per hen, feed per dozen, cost per dozen and feed conversion
Lay rate, eggs per hen, feed per dozen and lb of feed per lb of eggs for each laying flock.
The Eggs page and each flock's page show laying performance, worked out from egg collections and the flock daily log.
- Lay rate — eggs ÷ hens on hand each day. 80% means 8 eggs a day from 10 hens. 60–85% is typical in the first year.
- Eggs per hen, and per hen per week.
- Feed per dozen — typically 3.5–5 lb for hens on pasture — and its cost.
- Feed conversion — lb of feed per lb of eggs (a dozen large eggs is about 1.5 lb). 2.3–3.3 is typical on pasture; it's highlighted above that. Laying ducks are counted with their heavier eggs (about 1.9 lb a dozen) and compared with 2.6–3.6.
- Cost per dozen — feed plus the flock's other costs (bedding, supplies, vet). What the hens cost is spread over 2 years of laying. It's shown next to your egg price, with what's left per dozen. Owners and managers only.
To include bedding, supplies and the hens themselves, pick the flock when you add the expense. The Cost per Dozen by Laying Flock report has the same numbers for any period; Cost of production adds farm overhead.
High feed per dozen? Check for feed waste and rodents, hens in molt, or older hens. The Laying Performance report has the same numbers for any period.
